Motivation:
Most parents do not receive any explicit education in parenting or child development. Parents tend to replicate the parenting received from our own parents with an added mix of good will and common sense. Often this is not sufficient for us to feel effective and to thrive in our parenting role, especially if our own parents were not optimal role models, probably because their own parents were not optimal role models, and so on over generations.
The experience I have gathered in psychotherapy has shown me that many of us receive parenting that is lacking in some way/s. In ineffective parenting we find the seeds of psychological issues that arise as we grow up. Some people end up in psychotherapy in an attempt to fix these issues as adults.
I believe it is time to focus on prevention work by training parents, so that parents can heal the wounds from their own upbringing, feel more effective as parents now, future generations can enjoy a healthier upbringing and, hopefully, a brighter experience of life as a whole following childhood.
The Deliberate Parenting course is based on Schema Theory principles by Jeff Young and follow-up work by John & Karen Louis, who carried out research in this area and co-created the Good Enough Parenting method.
The course provides a safe space for parents to learn, be vulnerable, get support, share stories, connect with their Inner Child, and practise new skills.
